Word of the Day: "Touch Base"

That's two words again, I should just call it "phrase of the day."

So, "touch base". This one has been around for a long time. I have usually heard it used in an office setting, occasionally in the classroom. It should just mean to meet up and catch up on where everyone is.

There was never an issue for me because I usually heard it used in full context. A time would almost always be proposed on when this base would be touched, who would be involved in the touching of these bases, and it would be propositioned after a meeting of some sort about work.

The words don't make any sense together to me though. What base? Which base is being touched? What is the base attached to? Research suggested that it could have something to do with baseball, but every base in baseball has a name: first, second, third, or home. Did someone make it to first or home safe? Don't you need to call a timeout to confer at a base if you're not a base coach?
